Project Overview
Women of Dominica is a compelling feature-length documentary that threads together the voices of ten Dominican women whose stories represent strength, sisterhood, and the power of resilience. Set against the lush backdrop of the island, the film journeys through their lived experiences as mothers, mentors, survivors, and change makers to reveal the profound impact of intergenerational wisdom, community support, and cultural identity.
This film is a personal tribute to the director’s mother, a cultural icon in Dominica and recipient of the Golden Drum Award—the nation’s highest honor for the promotion and preservation of traditional Creole cultural wear. Rooted in love, legacy, and identity, the project was also a way to connect the director’s Dominican American daughter to her ancestral heritage, bridging generations through story, tradition, and the vibrant spirit of Caribbean womanhood.
Meet the Director:
Directed and produced by Farrah La Ronde-Hutchison, a Caribbean-born, U.S.-based environmental scientist exploring the intersection of nature, culture, and women. She was born on the Nature Isle of the Caribbean, Dominica. An island celebrated for its rich biodiversity, vibrant cultural heritage, and centenarian population.

Building on her environmental expertise, she founded Gaia’s Essence, a wellness company through which she champions community-based health education. Her work centers on the vital connection between clean food, water, and air. Over the years, she has partnered with major brands such as Whole Foods Market to advance her mission of promoting sustainable, healthy living.
Women of Dominica is Farrah’s first feature-length documentary. Through lush island imagery and intimate narratives, she blends conservation with culture, honoring her mother, a Golden Drum Award recipient for her contributions to traditional Creole cultural wear. Farrah lives in sunny California with her husband of nearly 20 years and their two children.
