Project Overview

Women of Dominica is a compelling and thought-provoking documentary that sheds light on the life experiences of a group of Dominican women who have shaped the future for the next generation. This film focuses on what it means to be from a community that supports each other and the impacts of how mentorship can change someone’s life. Enter into a magical world where people and nature are one, welcome to the “Nature Isle”.

To my daughter and every little Dominican Girl to always celebrate their Dominican culture.

Women of Dominica was born from a deep place of love, legacy, and responsibility. My mother, a lifelong cultural guardian, was honored with the Golden Drum Award in 2019. The award is Dominica’s highest recognition for contributions to the preservation of our traditional Creole wear, which she upheld for over 35 years. Her passion, unwavering dedication, and pride in our heritage shaped not only my identity but also the lives of countless women she inspired. This film is my way of honoring her life’s work and ensuring her story and the stories of so many other women, are not just remembered, but revered.

My filmmaking journey began organically. While supporting my son’s career in acting from a very young age, I immersed myself in the creative process and learned the language of film firsthand. That experience, paired with the guidance of mentors, gave me the tools and perspective to direct this film with both heart and purpose.

As a Dominican woman raising a daughter away from the island, I felt the importance to build a bridge between generations. I wanted my daughter to understand the rich cultural heritage she comes from. Women of Dominica is more than a film. It is a love letter to my lineage, a tribute to the women who shaped me, and an inspiration to the next generation to always embrace and celebrate the culture that lives within them.

Directed and produced by Farrah La Ronde-Hutchison, a Caribbean-born, U.S.-based environmental scientist exploring the intersection of nature, culture, and women. She was born on the Nature Isle of the Caribbean, Dominica. An island celebrated for its rich biodiversity, vibrant cultural heritage, and centenarian population.

Building on her environmental expertise, she founded Gaia’s Essence, a wellness company through which she champions community-based health education. Her work centers on the vital connection between clean food, water, and air. Over the years, she has partnered with major brands such as Whole Foods Market to advance her mission of promoting sustainable, healthy living.

Women of Dominica is Farrah’s first feature-length documentary. Through lush island imagery and intimate narratives, she blends conservation with culture, honoring her mother, a Golden Drum Award recipient for her contributions to traditional Creole cultural wear. Farrah lives in sunny California with her husband of nearly 20 years and their two children.
